Tour Description
This thousand year old Episcopal seat, today an archiepiscopal center, is one of the most beautiful Baroque towns in our country. Begin our journey from Budapest and head north on the highway towards Eger. It takes a bit more then an hour to get there.
After arriving to Eger take a pleasant walk around the historical center of the town. You visit the second largest church in Hungary, the neo-classical Eger cathedral which possesses the largest organ in the country. On the first floor of the building opposite, the late Baroque
Lyceum- today a college - is one of the most beautiful libraries in the country. The medieval Castle of Eger is a victorious frontier castle of the Turkish era. Climb the 93 steps of one of the symbols of Eger, the Minaret, which is Europe’s northernmost Turkish building and rises forty meters above the town. The Turkish bath is a relic of the special bathing culture which evolved during the era of the Turkish occupation between 1526 and 1686. Eger is also the home of fiery red wines: in the Szépasszony Valley there are cellars, hundreds of years old, dug into the porous rock, where you can experience the world famous Bikavér (Bull`s Blood) of Eger. Enjoy a magnificent lunch at one of Eger`s local restaurants.
