Szentendre is a lovely, charming Baroque town with a Mediterranean ambience located on the Danube bank 20 km from Budapest. In the 18th century, it used to be the center of the Serbs in Hungary when it became the seat of their commercial, cultural and ecclesiastical life for a hundred years. The 18th century was the town`s golden age but unfortunately, it soon came to an end as Szentendre began to decline. In the 19th century, the town suffered from floods, epidemics and it was slowly transformed into a memorial, preserving the atmosphere of its 18th-century existence. It was exactly this specific ambience that helped Szentendre to start prospering again. In the 1920`s artists began to discover its hills, the natural beauty of the Danube and the attractions of its buildings. Szentendre, which used to be a rich town of down to earth tradesmen in the 18th century, become a cosy nest for poor, bohemian artists who frequently created their pictures here.

 

Today, Szentendre is a small town with close to 25.000 inhabitants and households of tourists in the summer. It has been the destination of both Hungarians and tourists who enjoy the atmosphere of the town.

 

You can visit the picturesque town of Szentendre along the river Danube. Following a walk through the Baroque center of the village, see the Ceramic Museum of Margaret Kovács a famous Hungarian artist. Since Szentendre is an artistic village there are many museums to enjoy. There is always a good place to have a pleasant lunch in one of the cosy restaurants.

 

A visit to the open-air village museum, wine tasting and cooking lesson is also possible.
